Aberfeldy New Village
September 2014 – March 2015
We developed a Public Art and Wayfinding strategy for Aberfeldy New Village, focusing on the soon-to-be developed areas of the Aberfeldy Estate. As with all our projects, we collaborated closely with the community to ensure the overarching narrative of public art is meaningful for both existing and new residents throughout the development’s lifetime.

About the project
We developed a Public Art and Wayfinding strategy for Aberfeldy New Village, focusing on the soon-to-be developed areas of the Aberfeldy Estate. As with all our projects, we collaborated closely with the community to ensure the overarching narrative of public art is meaningful for both existing and new residents throughout the development’s lifetime.
Drawing on the rich history of East India Dock, we explored themes of trade through a mobile cart of curiosities that travelled around Aberfeldy Estate, visiting local community groups we identified. Filled with spices, fabrics, tools, textures, and dyes historically traded in the area, the cart invited people to stop, explore, and engage in sensory exchanges with us—regardless of language. This sparked curiosity and led to the sharing of personal stories and memories connected to the objects.
Using these curiosities as inspiration, we held co-design workshops to create paisley artwork for bespoke paving stones, cast concrete tea crates symbolising the arrival of goods, and carved stones representing the oddities that come through trade.
