Carpenters Estate

August 2020 - December 2022

We led resident engagement for the major redevelopment of the Carpenters Estate in Stratford, supporting the co-creation of a masterplan that includes the partial demolition and rebuilding of existing homes. The plan was endorsed via a resident ballot in December 2021. Phase 1 received planning permission in March 2022, and an outline application for the full masterplan was approved in 2024.

About the project

We led resident engagement for the major redevelopment of the Carpenters Estate in Stratford, supporting the co-creation of a masterplan that includes the partial demolition and rebuilding of existing homes. The plan was endorsed via a resident ballot in December 2021. Phase 1 received planning permission in March 2022, and an outline application for the full masterplan was approved in 2024. To ensure meaningful and inclusive engagement, we employed a full spectrum of methods — from door-knocking and phone calls to both digital and analogue communications. Targeted programmes such as study trips, community gardening, and a young designers group allowed us to engage residents around their specific interests and needs. All resident interactions were carefully recorded, enabling detailed reporting on reach and sentiment. These insights were shared regularly with the client, design team, and political stakeholders — with weekly updates provided during key phases of the project. A cornerstone of our in-person approach was the creation of The Dovetail, a dedicated engagement and community space. The Dovetail hosted workshops, exhibitions, and events related to the design process, while also offering residents the opportunity to run their own programming for neighbours. This dual function brought together the borough’s social value ambitions with the goals of the engagement programme.
