Petticoat Lane Heritage Trail
October 2021 - July 2022
We have recently collaborated with the London Historic Buildings Trust (LHBT) to create a heritage trail along Petticoat Lane.
About the project
In 2021 we began working with the London Historic Buildings Trust (LHBT) to create a temporary heritage trail along Petticoat Lane, East London. This project combined heritage and culture, with LHBT recruiting and training local researchers to compile written content, while make:good worked with local schools and communities to develop artwork. The artwork was temporarily installed in the area, with QR codes on each vinyl with links to web pages with more information about each local character or theme.
Phase 2 was delivered in 2024-25 and was a larger-scale project. A team made up of heritage specialists and local people developed a permanent, self-led trail based on 10 different themes that tell the story of Petticoat Lane. The plaques were designed in collaboration with students at Canon Barnett Primary School and the Project Steering Group, using motifs and imagery from archival photographs. Make:good then adapted these brilliant collages into designs to be cut out of metal. The information layer is screenprinted onto ceramic, and the base layer is made out of 100% recycled sheet plastic. Many thanks to Studio Makecreate for their fantastic work fabricating and installing the plaques.

Although a small project, the Petticoat Lane Heritage Trail demonstrates our ability to engage on heritage issues and broaden who gets to influence and tell the stories of local heritage by working closely with the community.
