About the project

make:good was commissioned by the Canal & River Trust to lead a programme of engagement and participatory activities to develop core designs for four key sites, reflecting local people’s priorities, ideas, and aspirations for the future of the canal. Through a variety of engagement opportunities, make:good spoke with over 200 individuals and more than 20 organisations, groups, and key stakeholders. These conversations helped generate collaborative designs, using the canal’s bicentenary as a catalyst for positive change within local communities. The designs for these four sites aim to tell the story of Regent’s Canal’s rich history and heritage, encouraging people to visit not only the individual locations but also to explore the canal as a vibrant route through new areas of London. By generating these designs and priorities through community-led approaches—including pop-ups, event tag-ons, co-design workshops, and one-to-one conversations—we have established a foundation for ongoing community involvement throughout the project and beyond. This work fosters awareness and ownership of how these spaces can serve local communities for the next 200 years.
