About the project

We were commissioned by Southampton City Council to work closely with schools and a college along a small stretch of residential streets in Southampton to co-design initiatives promoting sustainable travel and influencing how people choose to travel. All outputs and activities were developed collaboratively with local residents, teachers, parents, children, and young people. We dedicated significant time to gathering insights by running workshops, pop-ups, and drop-in sessions both on the street and within schools. This engagement helped identify key issues and generate ideas to encourage people not to drive their children to school. Throughout the project, we established a reflective working group, or ‘travel team,’ with representatives from every school, the council, and residents. This group met regularly to set priorities around transport and local pedestrian infrastructure. The Council agreed to implement some physical improvements, complemented by homework resources designed to spark conversations at home about different travel modes and local features that could be explored on the walk to school. The project culminated in a street party that celebrated the activities and helped re-establish a sense of community among the schools.
