Activity Support Worker Role

We are looking for two people to join the make:good team to support activities at: Grow Box (Address: Vincent Street, Canning Town, E16 1LS)

and Custom Made (address: 25 Freemasons Road, Custom House, E16 3AR)


Project background


Grow Box is a meanwhile community space located on an estate in Canning Town. The project sits within a wider regeneration programme that will bring new homes, outdoor spaces, and commercial opportunities to the area. Commissioned by the London Borough of Newham and delivered in partnership with Meanwhile Space, Grow Box provides workshop and outdoor space for local people to lead activities, connect with neighbours, and build community through creative, social, and wellbeing programmes.

Custom Made is a meanwhile community space located on a high street Custom House. The project sits within a wider regeneration programme of Custom House that will bring new homes, outdoor spaces, and commercial opportunities to the area. Commissioned by the London Borough of Newham and delivered in partnership with Meanwhile Space, Custom Made provides activity and shop space for local people to lead activities, connect with neighbours, sell their handmade products, in addition to building community through creative, social, and wellbeing programmes.

Scope of the role


  • Part-time role: 8 hours per week

  • Based at Grow Box / Custom Made

  • Paid at London Living Wage (£14.80 per hour)

  • Fixed-term contract for 10 months*, starting September 2026

This role is linked to the current funded project timeline.


Purpose of the role


We are looking for someone who lives in or is familiar with either the Canning Town or Custom House area and enjoys working with people to help support and grow activities at Grow Box/Custom Made. This role would suit someone who is community-minded, reliable, proactive, and interested in developing skills in community engagement, facilitation, and marketing.


You do not need formal qualifications or previous experience running activities. We are looking for someone with the right attitude, willingness to learn, and willingness to positively support local activities and community members.


Key responsibilities


These activities would be supported by team make:good and there would be lots of room for learning these skills. 


1. Communication & Promotion

  • Supporting promotion of activities through posters, flyers, social media, and word of mouth. Experience using Canva or Adobe Creative Suite is desirable but not required

  • Sharing updates, opportunities, and information with local residents and facilitators

  • Helping encourage participation and build relationships with the local community

  • Supporting coordination of events, gatherings, and activities


2. Opening & Supporting the Space

  • Acting as a keyholder to open and close Grow Box where appropriate. You may be required to open and close the space on weekends, if there is an activity / event running 

  • Supporting facilitators to set up and run sessions

  • Welcoming participants and helping create a positive atmosphere

  • Leading simple activities or sessions where appropriate and with support


3. Community & Session Support

  • Helping organise group get-togethers and peer support sessions

  • Keeping simple records of activities and attendance

  • Supporting an inclusive, welcoming, and respectful environment

  • Checking in with facilitators and participants and communicating any issues to the team

Lived experience and knowledge of the local area are highly valued and we are especially interested in people who are:

  • Friendly, approachable, and welcoming

  • Reliable and punctual

  • Confident communicating with a range of people

  • Interested in supporting local community activity

  • Willing to learn new skills, including promotion and social media

  • Comfortable getting involved in a range of activities, including creative and movement-based sessions

  • Supportive, patient, and encouraging towards others

  • Able to work independently as well as part of a team

  • Proactive and able to take initiative when needed

  • Flexible and adaptable in a community-led environment

  • Organised enough to manage simple tasks and responsibilities

  • Respectful of different backgrounds, experiences, and abilities


Additional information


Upon starting the role, two fixed afternoons at Grow Box/Custom Made will be agreed to help ensure the space can open consistently for local people and activities.
